Sometime later, my eyes fluttered open to the sounds of knocking on the front door. I sat up on the side of the bed, instead of leaping up on my shaky legs. I got to a standing position, already dressed, and stumbled from the room, down the hallway, to the front door. I leaned on it with a shoulder and lifted the curtain covering the diamond-shaped window.
“Who is it?” I asked, peering outside.
My eyes focused on the largest wolf I had ever seen, standing on the front porch on its hind legs, covered in silky gray fur, and its red eyes peering in at me. I dropped the curtain and stooped below the window, but it wasn’t enough.
The creature grabbed the doorknob and tried to open the door by shaking it with vigor. “Let me in,” it growled. “You cannot hide where I cannot find you.”
“Who are you and what do you want from me?” I yelled at a moment’s silence.
When the creature slammed its body against the door so hard it shattered the window, it stuck its snout inside. “I am here for you. I await your coming.”
Fear bound me from running when the door cracked from the creature’s constant body-slamming. When the door came off its hinges and flew over my head, the creature reached for me with a mighty paw. I tried to scream but it was useless when no one could hear me.
